Sunday, september 10th, 2017- Reading Log #1 ,Topic Choice #1-Characters The main characters of the story are Dorothy and toto (her dog), she lived with her Uncle Henry and her Aunt Em. They are important because they were in a giant cyclone which swept them to a mystical land that was not kansas. Kansas was grey and dull, nothing had color but in this mystical land everything was bright and colorful. Dorothy is not a static character because she started off as a normal girl who lived on a gloomy farm with not much but her dog toto. After she taken away by a cyclone her whole life changes from gloomy to joyful and energetic. Evidence of this claim is stated on page (5) paragraph 1, "Dorothy sat up and noticed that the house was not moving; nor was it dark ,for the bright sunshine came in at the window, flooding the little room. This statement shows that she had gone to a different place because as described in the begining of the book,"when Dorothy stood in the doorway and looked around, she could only see nothing but the great grey Prairie". The word grey emphasizes that where she lived was not very bright and wonderful as the place hse landed in when she was taken by the cyclone.
Monday September 25, 2017 ReadingLog#2,Topic choice #3-plot The most important scene in the beginning of the Wizard of Oz to the middle of the book talks about Dorothy's trip to the All powerful Wizard Of Oz and who she meets and finds on the way their. During her trip to the emerald city the scene that all started the trip causes some conflict between dorothy and the wicked witch of the west. The plot of the story was to get dorothy to the emerald city but in a much harder way as a munchkin states on page 15 he said," the country here is rich and pleasant, but you must pass through rough and dangerous places before you reach the end of your journey". Dorothy in the scene where she is told that she had killed the witch, she was very surprised that she did this because it was not here intention. The scene is an exposition because it gives background information about the witches and the place that Dorothy landed in. Page (14)" For everyone knew she had been the means of destroying the wicked witch and setting them free from the bondage. This Quote meaning, showing that the munchkins were the slaves of the wicked witch of the west and were finally free after Dorothy's house squashed her. I predict that the death of the witch will play a big part later on in the story.
Thursday October 19,2017 Reading Log #4 -The Dark Hills Divide choice #4 Literary Elements In the first chapter of the book it introduces a girl named Alexa and a old man or a Warvold as the narrator described. During the First chapter Alexa is walking through town with Warvold. He is a leader, farther, and keeper of the hidden key (which opens a gate in the second page of the book). After entering this gate they come across a wall that he(Warvold) built many years ago to keep dangers out and protect his wife Renny and son, Nicolas( who are introduced later on in the book ). He now feels that maybe the walls keeps dangers in. Warvold tells Alexa a fable about 6 blind men and an elephant as they feel one spot and determine what it is. They are quiet for a moment and then Warvold sadly dies. When Warvold is telling the story of the 6 blind men, he states that each blind man compares a part of a elephant to another object such as a wall or snake." The first approached the elephant, and happening to fall Against his broad and sturdy side, At once began to bawl:"God bless me! But the elephant Is like a wall". This is a metaphor, which is a direct comparison between two things.
